The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan YouTube shorts have been quite the delight. They're cute. They're funny. And most importantly, they're Haruhi-freaking-Suzumiya! But there's another YouTube spin-off series, and I'm not quite getting this one. What is all the rage with Nyoro~n Churuya-san?
Humor is subjective.
I get that. Not everyone will find the same thing funny, and I'm clearly on the outside looking in when it comes to Nyoro~n. To me, the whole series falls flat. I've laughed an honest laugh maybe once. And I've seen every episode, only being able to follow the anime because each weekly episode runs roughly two minutes long.
I understand that the core concept behind the series is an obscure Internet meme. And I'm aware that the meme has no deeper meaning behind it... I think. But what anyone finds funny about that core joke evades me completely. The execution is transparent. The jokes are cheap, and any chuckle feels forced.
Looking at the source material, it's obvious that asking for any depth is missing the point. But then, why even bother? Wouldn't this have been better left as some strange little piece of Internet humor? Couldn't we be getting three Haruhi-chan shorts per week instead of two? That sounds far more appetizing to me.
However, the comments below each YouTube entry and each forum post on MyAnimeList paint a different picture. People are raving about it. They're eating this up! How could I be so wrong? I'm certainly not the supreme judge of all things funny, but really? Nyoro~n?
Am I the only one not getting it? Do you guys all love the series too? Or are all those comments a vocal minority?

I'm chuckling more at the fact that everyone's eating it up. I'm just waiting for Kadokawa to troll everyone by saying, "oh by the way, Haruhi-chan is really Haruhi S2, hope you enjoyed it!" No, but seriously, for all the fuss and anger at Haruhi, but as soon as something new comes out, everyone eats it right up.
Anyway, I think I'm getting off topic. I didn't really get the Nyoro~n ones either, the few I watched. It was kinda like 1. Walk up to someone 2. Ask for cheese 3. ??? 4. Nyoro~n

Everybody loves those short anime spin-offs. The series is short and funny in a weird way, what's not to like? We couldnt say that the series is always funny (like in your poll), there are some scenes that are laughable, some are not. Depends if you like those cute chibi characters. (Yeah, they are cute for me.)

Churuya-san started off her viral popularity via a clever Locoroco AMV sort of thing, and it and its 4-koma stuff turned into doujinshi gold. The rest is (relative) history (that I don't keep tabs on).
One of the defining aspect about Haruhi (this is very clear in the novel form) is a healthy (perhaps more than healthy) dose of cynicism about positive humanism. This manifests into a comical sense of sadism about the harsh reality that one may perceive to be the norm in the Churuya-san comic. You do have to be on a certain wavelength to get them, to laugh at it. Not for everyone, natch.

I love the Haruhi shorts. Love them. They, more then anything else, made me want to see an actual season two of Haruhi (I honestly always thought the series, while quite good, was a tad overrated). I might even like the shorts more than the actual series.
I watched one of the nyoro~n shorts you're talking about. Didn't really get it, continued on with the Haruhi shorts. Loved them again.
Now I am yearning for an actual season two of Haruhi.

I am one of the idiots who likes Nyoro~n Churuya-san.
I'm pretty confused as to why I like it myself. Really, I think it's simply because there's a chibi Tsuruya running around. I know that the jokes aren't funny, but it's the cute Tsuruya (and perhaps the contrast between Tsuruya/Asahina and the other characters) that pulls me in...?

@ Nazarielle
Eating up Haruhi after being trolled is ok, since we're giving our love to the series, not the production company. I can be annoyed by them and love their series at the same time.
I guess Nyoro~n is funny because the creators subvert your normal expectation for step 4 to be "Profit!"?
@ Kairu Ishimaru
I love the chibi characters in Haruhi-chan, but the non-chibi art in Churuya-san kills me. You make a point about people falling for anime specials. Little extras like this usually bore me, but Haruhi-chan is too funny to ignore.
@ omo
After checking it out, the original Nyoro~n 4-koma works better for me, even though it's the exact same material. Something about it's presentation gets a chuckle out of me sometimes, even if it's a cheap and quick one. Adapting it to an anime short is where what little humor there is gets lost for me.
Aaah, the novels. One day I'll check those at, but not now. I don't want to spoil the anime, as that is the medium I'll get the most enjoyment out of it from. Too bad we have to wait so damn long...
@ Glo the Legend
Maybe, just maybe, we'll get season 2 after the Re-Airing of Haruhi Suzumiya? The re-broadcast and the shorts will end at the same point, leading right into season 2! I can feel it! Praise the lord!
@ fangzhao
Don't put it like that. I'm the idiot who doesn't get Nyoro~n.

@ Michael
I've heard rumors of that very thing happening.
That re-broadcast was completely stupid. I got excited for that too. Maybe they were just reminding people of it, so they would be all caught up for the eventual season 2 (as you kind of said).
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Churuya-san is sometimes funny, but each bit is too short, at least for me, to equal the madcap hilarity that Haruhi-chan brings every week. Haruhi-chan very much reminds me of the comedic stylings of Potemayo; cutesy character designs and a colorful palette, but snarky, absurdist humor beneath, with a slight nod towards continuity. It's a universe that operates in its own brand of "logic", but once you get the spirit, it becomes enormously entertaining.

In a way, life sucks for the optimistic and kind Churuya just because. Nyoro~n Churuya-san is very much a "bad things happen to a good person" thing, so I guess you could say it's dark humor wrapped up in a cute package, as omo said.
I like Haruhi-chan more than Churuya-san, but I still find the latter funny in that sort of way.

@ Glo the Legend
Of course, rumors have pointed to season 2 before and not come through for us. At this point, all we can do is keep hope alive. It would make a lot of sense for them to air a replay leading up to the new season. Too much sense...
@ kadian1364
I agree, drawing out the humor in Churuya-san might help a bit. And that reminds me, I have to watch Potemayo.
@ TheBigN
Is Churuya really a kind and good person? Do you understand the cruel and inhumane treatment cows go through to produce that smoked cheese... just kidding.

I'm pretty much the same. Perhaps it's just that the characters in Nyoron aren't as iconic as the characters in Haruhi for me, since here seems to be on more of a focus on how Churuya's being abused than what crazy plan Haruhi has and everyone's hilarious actions and reactions. Nyoron is less funny, less energetic and just not as entertaining.

@ Omisyth
Good point on the characters' personalities being absent in Nyoro~n. The only one with any personality is Churuya, and then that isn't even consistent with the character we know from the anime.
