I heard the buzz after the first episode aired; minutes into watching it for myself, I knew this was something special. With only one episode in the tank, I could only say that it was one of the best anime starts I had ever seen. Two episodes in, and I was hooked. Now that three have aired, it's time for me to say it: this is the best anime airing right now! Easily.
OK, admittedly I haven't seen every single anime airing right now. Sure, something out there could be better... but I doubt it. The execution is flawless so far. I can't think of a single thing I'd change, except for the excruciating week I have to wait between episodes. Even the most mundane of scenes are well written and well shot.
Both the writing and direction are snappy. Characters feel fresh and unique, and there hasn't been one introduced yet that I don't want more time with. The first fight has both well animated action and creative logic behind it. Touma is a man amongst wimpy anime leads. His voice actor -- Abe Atsushi -- is definitely the next big thing, with one hell of a unique and interesting voice.
It does feel a little like Shakugan no Shana, if only everything Shana did wrong it had instead done right. I know so little about the overall story -- 16 light novels of material so far -- and I'm already a massive fanboy. Seriously, if you haven't seen it yet, check it out now. You won't be disappointed.
